Departing from the pop-punk style of his 2020 album, Tickets To My Downfall, and his previous single, “emo girl”, “ay!” sees Machine Gun Kelly team up with rapper Lil Wayne for an introspective emo-rap track.

First teased via a snippet on Instagram, Machine Gun Kelly later performed the song in full during his appearance on The Late Late Show in February 2022. Fans originally theorized that previous collaborators Naomi Wild or phem did the vocals on the chorus, but Kells confirmed on Twitter that it was just him.

Lil Wayne is also no stranger to pop punk, having dabbled in the genre alongside the track’s producer Travis Barker over a decade ago on his rap-rock album, Rebirth.
