Sam first teased the union with Madonna in a snippet that had both of them verbalising their names “Sam and Madonna” with the tag S X M. On 31st May 2023, the pair announced that the effort was a single, entitled “Vulgar”.

On 9th June 2023 the song dropped. It is a response to the negative reaction to Sam’s new material and image in the media, concentrating on their song “Unholy” and the display of it’s succeeding live performances. Particularly, the song is a response to a viral debate about Sam and his tour, hosted by interviewer and television personality Piers Morgan, where he made comments describing the performances as “disgusting and vulgar”. One of the debaters Douglas Murray, who argued against Sam, also added that their performances were not original, saying “Madonna did this 40 years ago”. The entire interview went viral and is said to have served as inspiration for the song’s title and message.
