DJ Hacord Advocates for Fair Compensation

Nigerian DJs have long played a crucial role in the industry but often without the fair compensation they deserve. DJ Hacord, an internationally renowed figure in the industry, sheds light on some of the challenges faced by DJs, highlighting an ongoing issue that continues to affect their livelihood. Reflecting on the past, DJ Hacord recalls a time when DJs operated in the shadows, seen as background figures rather than artists and curators in their own right.

“For years, DJs in Nigeria have been essential to the industry. We drive energy at events and curate musical experiences, but our contributions have not always been properly acknowledged. There was a stigma attached to being a DJ,” he explains. “People didn’t always recognize the skill and artistry behind what we do so many DJs have struggled to earn a living wage from gigs,” DJ Hacord reveals. “We were often paid less than other performers or not paid at all, despite the hours of preparation and skill required.”
However, DJ Hacord believes that the industry is evolving, with growing appreciation for DJs and their impact on music culture. “One of the key game changers has been digital technology and social media. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and streaming services have democratized music consumption,” DJ Hacord explains. “DJs now have a global platform to share their mixes, connect with fans, showcase their talents and collaborate with artists from around the world.”
Moreover, the rise of Afrobeats as a global phenomenon has catapulted Nigerian DJs into the international spotlight. “Afrobeats has opened doors for Nigerian DJs to showcase their talent on a global stage,” DJ Hacord remarks. “We are seeing Nigerian DJs headlining festivals, touring internationally, and collaborating with top artists.”

Despite these advancements, challenges persist, particularly in navigating copyright issues and ensuring equitable compensation for DJs’ contributions. “We still face hurdles in terms of copyright laws and fair pay,” DJ Hacord notes. “It’s crucial for industry stakeholders to recognize the value we bring and ensure that DJs are compensated fairly.”
