“A group of Nigerians have taken to the streets of Abuja to protest plans by the Senate to punish social media critics with a two-year jail term.

The protest is currently taking place at the Unity Fountain in Abuja and protesters intend to take their grievances to the National Assembly complex later in the day.

The jail sentence was contained in a new bill meant to ‘Prohibit Frivolous Petitions and other Related Matters’ which was sponsored by Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah from Kebbi State.

The plan has drawn widespread criticism from citizens around the country leading President Muhammadu Buhari to restate his commitment to preserve the freedom of speech guaranteed by the constitution.”
