When looking at historic photographs of the representation of rearranged organs, one has to keep in mind that “natural” position vary between male and female anatomy.
This illustration demonstrates the movement and position of the abdominal organs. The torso on the left shows a body that has never worn a corset. (Uterus and ovaries are not shown, but are located in front bottom of the small intestines.)
The left torso represents a body that has been corseted showing a 6″ to 8″ reduction. The different colors indicate:
New York bariatric physician Dr. Jyotindra Shah told the Huffington Post that “long-term use of a corset can bruise internal organs, damage skin and restrict breathing.” Shallow breathing from the chest compression can lead to light-headedness, while the garment’s pressure and rubbing against the skin can cause rashes.
Dr. Orly Avitzur, a neurologist and medical advisor for Consumer Reports who has written extensively about the risks of shapewear. She has seen firsthand a growing number of women coming into her Tarrytown, New York practice with nerve problems that result from wearing skinny jeans along with shapewear like Spanx, that compress the abdomen, Bvtt and thighs.
One 15-year-old soccer player came to see her complaining of pain, numbness, and tingling on the side of her thigh, resulting from a pinched nerve due to too much compression. The girl had also been to a gastrointestinal specialist for stomach pain, which resolved along with the nerve problem after she stopped wearing the shapewear.
Some wearers find them horribly uncomfortable, and also experience restricted movement, difficulty breathing and even rib damage or deformities. Many users have also reported digestive issues, acid reflux and heartburn, along with headaches, while a few even develop Vag!nal yeast infections and bladder infections, especially if they put off going to the bathroom because it’s too difficult to remove the garments.
Men who wear these items, skinny jeans or belts that are too tight can develop nerve pain and digestive problems. The best advice is to avoid shapewear or just wear it for the least amount of time possible. Think of corsets and Spanx like a pair of fantastic stilettos. Restrict these undergarments to special events, but then take them off as oson as possible.
