#EndSARS: IG bans SARS from conducting Illegal Search and acting as Body Guards |
After the recent outcry of Nigerians about the many atrocities committed by SARS Operatives, where some Nigerian youths demanded that the Special Anti Robbery Squad SARS be scrapped (END SARS), the IG Inspector General of Police Mr. Ibrahim Idris as banned SARS Operatives from conducting any illegal search. He also said they are to stop acting as Body Guards to VIP's as that is not their job.
But even after this ban, SARS Operatives continue their intimidation and harassment nationwide with no regard for authority or human rights. SARS was created to fight Armed Robbery, but their actions are now seen like they are the actual robbers. Speaking on the issue, the Inspector General of Police; Mr Ibrahim Idris added that SARS operatives should put on police uniform with identification numbers.
"You must operate in official uniform clearly marked for identification. I just want to warn you all here that any officer caught engaging in these activities will be dealt with accordingly. “The Nigeria Police force under my leadership shall operate strictly guided by the human rights principles as enshrined in the United Nations charter on human rights,” h the Police IG said.
He went further to add that there are monitoring units to check the actions of SARS operatives.
“The Nigeria Police Force under my leadership, shall operate strictly guided by the human rights principles as enshrined under the United Nations Charter on human rights and other extant laws.
“In demonstration of good faith to the aspiration of the Nigerian populace, I have given mandate to the IGP’s Monitoring Units and ‘X’ Squad and other oversight units of the Force to monitor the activities of the SARS operatives, while in the same vain, citizens are encouraged to avail the police ways to improve SARS operations across the nation”.
Since the Police has said they won't End Sars, but will rather Reform Sars, we hope that all these measures will not just be ordinary talk, but actions taken to curb the extortion and harassment by SARS on Nigerians.
