British singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dev Hynes does not sit still. Under the moniker Blood Orange, the former Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion member has built a catalog of restless, emotionally precise pop, from 2013’s Cupid Deluxe to 2018’s Negro Swan, which earned him a Mercury Prize nomination. After a seven-year gap between proper studio albums, Hynes released Essex Honey in the summer of 2025, an album that Variety called a “chill masterpiece”. It was his first album in seven years, featuring collaborations with Lorde, Caroline Polachek, and Daniel Caesar, and he toured it across three continents into 2026.

Now, less than a year after that full-length, Hynes is back with “Essex_Honey.mp3,” his first release of 2026. The track is a loose, hypnotic single that blurs the line between a new recording and a remix of something that never quite existed. The title nods to his previous album, but the music is its own artifact. Built on a woozy synth pad and a clattering, old-school rave breakbeat, the song drifts like a half-remembered dream. The ethereal atmosphere is anchored by a prominent and deliberate sample of Sky Ferreira’s 2013 single “Everything Is Embarrassing,” a track Hynes co-wrote and produced that helped define the early Blood Orange sound.
