Puerto Rican singer Jay Wheeler never planned to record a salsa song. His catalog, built on trap, R&B, and reggaetón, earned him two Latin Grammy nominations and a loyal following across Latin America. But his grandfather, the man who first played salsa records in his childhood home, deserved a different kind of tribute. “Rubio,” the focus track from Wheeler’s 2025 album La Voz Favorita, opens a new door. The song arrived as part of the 24-track project released on May 28, 2026, via Linked Music, Dynamic Records, and EMPIRE. Wheeler co-wrote the track and placed production in the hands of Manu Berlingeri, a producer known for his work on “De Lejitos,” which reached No. 12 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart in April 2026. A press release described the album as Wheeler’s most personal work to date, fusing trap, R&B, and reggaetón while still holding space for the romantic ballads his fans expect. “Rubio” stands apart as the album’s only salsa cut, a deliberate departure that carries the weight of family history.
The official music video, directed and streaming on YouTube, matches the song’s warm, nostalgic tone. Shot in warm, amber tones, the visual follows Wheeler through a series of intimate domestic scenes—a dining table, a living room, a car ride at dusk. Family photographs flash on screen. Wheeler does not dance. He does not need to. The camera holds on his face, on the small moments of reflection between verses. The video premiered on May 28, 2026, the same day the album dropped. Wheeler celebrated the release with a live show at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, where he performed “Rubio” for the first time alongside songs from the new album, podcast segments, and a cooking series with his wife, Zhamira Zambrano.
