“Fine Line” sees Kesha opening up about struggling to keep her composure as her on-going legal battle against former producer Dr. Luke continues to affect her personal life and mental health.
It was released alongside “Eat the Acid” as a dual-single from Gag Order, the singer’s fifth studio album. Following Rainbow and High Road, it becomes Kesha’s third album since the start of her legal battle, and on “Fine Line,” she addresses the matter on one of her songs for the first time.
Following her appearance on Rick Rubin’s 60 Minutes episode in January, where she was seen in the studio with the producer and hinted at her fifth album, Kesha updated her bio on her social media accounts to lyrics from the song.
There’s a fine line between genius and crazy
After her “rebirthday,” she blacked out her Instagram account, suggesting the start of the album cycle, and throughout the rest of March and April, continued changing her bio with different “there’s a fine line between…” lyrics from the song.
During an Instagram Live held on March 8, Kesha revealed titles to several tracks from the album, including “Living in My Head” and “Fine Line,” and also played snippets of “Eat the Acid” and “The Drama.” Two weeks later, minute-long clips for both “Fine Line” and “Eat the Acid” were uploaded by Kesha to a burner SoundCloud account. These were only available for a full day and later removed.
On April 25, the singer started across several media platforms a live broadcast featuring a 24-hour-long countdown. Nearing the end of the timer, Kesha took to her socials to announce Gag Order and the double release for “Fine Line” and “Eat the Acid” later that week.

Lyric Video
There’s a fine line I’ve been walking
And trying to balance is exhausting
This is where you fuckers pushed me
Don’t be surprised if shit gets ugly
All the doctors and lawyers cut the tongue out of my mouth
I’ve been hiding my anger, but bitch look at me now
I’m at the top of the mountain with a gun to my head
Am I bigger than Jesus or better off dead?
There’s a fine line between genius and crazy
There’s a fine line between broken and breaking
Spent my whole life tryna to change what they’re saying about me
Sick of walking that fine line
Fine line between selling out and being bought
Fine line between famous and being forgot
It’s time I’m coming down off of the cross
Sick of walking that fine line
I feel safest in the silence
And I’m so goddamn sick of fighting
The truth keeps roaring like a lion
Yeah, that’ll be the cross I’ll die on
The years keep on dragging, I’m at the end of my rope
The noose gets tighter and tighter, I’m tasting blood in my throat
Don’t fucking call me a fighter, don’t fucking call me a joke
You have no fucking idea, trust me, you’ll never know
There’s a fine line between hope and delusion
Between what’s right and what we’ve just gotten used to
My whole life I’ve had something to prove to you
Sick of walking that fine line
Fine line between surviving and living
And, God, some things never should be forgiven
Guess what? I’m sick of pretending for you
Fine line, fine line, fine line
Fine line, fine line, fine line
This life was never mine
This life was never mine
This life was never mine
I can’t keep wasting time
I can’t keep wasting time
I can’t keep wasting time
There’s a fine line between what matters and doesn’t
Between letting go and giving up
Between happy and stupid as fuck
There’s a fine line between what’s entertaining
And what’s just exploiting the pain
But hey, look at all the money we made off me
