“Hold My Hand” is Lady Gaga’s original theme song for Top Gun: Maverick, the 2022 sequel to the widely successful original 1986 film.

The powerful and dramatic ballad, which plays during the film’s ending credits, was written and produced by Gaga in collaboration with BloodPop® and is inspired by the nostalgic ‘80s sound from the original film’s soundtrack.

Rumours about Gaga possibly recording an original Top Gun song started in 2021, after an insider revealed her involvement in the film’s music. They later also hinted at the song’s title, which fans correctly guessed. The first to report that Lady Gaga had been selected to write the theme song for the film was actually Rob Thomas, who revealed during a live show in 2020 that she had replaced him in the task. However, this message only caught Little Monsters’ attention for the first time in January 2022.

Later, in April 2022, a movie enthusiast shared pictures of a poster advertising the film, which included Gaga’s name next to Hans Zimmer’s and Harold Faltermeyer’s, thus confirming her contribution to the film’s original soundtrack.

The artist herself didn’t publicly acknowledge “Hold My Hand” until April 25, when she tweeted lyrics that included the title of the track:

Two days later, she officially announced the song on social media, revealing its artwork and release date. In the same posts, she also pointed out how the song has been in the works for a long time and how its message goes beyond the story of Top Gun.
