Maroon 5 Makes Me Wonder

“Makes Me Wonder” was originally written as a love song that levine wrote about “failed relationships,” which, he says, “went awfully wrong.”

The song’s lyrics have two different meanings. It contains political allusions under the guise of a love song, because Levin does not want to preach morality. He combines words of being in a failed relationship, an “inability to understand or trust” the leadership of his country.

One of the implications is Levin’s frustration with the state of politics and the role of the United States in the Iraq war. “Give me something to believe in / cause I don’t believe in you anymore.” Levin explains that the words “may not be directed at the Bush administration, but may be somewhat related to the subject.” The song describes the confusion of the band members from the political situation in the country. The second meaning is love. The words of the refrain reflect one of Levin’s connections, which went horribly wrong.
