Five-time Grammy winner PJ Morton steps away from the pop machinery of Maroon 5 to deliver a quiet sermon. The 45-year-old New Orleans native, born Paul Sylvester Morton Jr., has spent the last decade balancing stadium tours with an intimate solo career that prioritizes soul over spectacle. His father, gospel singer Paul Morton, placed a piano in front of him before he could read. That early exposure to church music never left him. Morton’s 2017 album “Gumbo” earned two Grammy nominations. His 2021 gospel project “The Gospel According to PJ” won Best Gospel Album. He released “Watch The Sun” in 2022, featuring Stevie Wonder and Nas. He made history as the first Black composer to write an original song for a Disney attraction, the 2024 “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.” Now, on May 29, 2026, he drops “Close Enough.” The track serves as the lead single from his upcoming double album “Saturday Night / Sunday Morning,” a 22-track project that splits between secular R&B and traditional gospel. Morton wrote, composed, and produced the song himself. He plays keyboards. Chris Payton handles guitar. Edward “Big Ed” Clark sits behind the drums. A full string section, arranged by Morton and conducted by Rafael Gargate, supports the arrangement with warm, swelling textures.

The song runs four minutes. Morton references the biblical story of the woman with an issue of blood, the one who believed that touching the hem of Jesus’ garment would heal her. He sings about exhaustion, about prayer that feels like it bounces off the ceiling, about faith reduced to a mustard seed. The official visualizer, streaming on YouTube, strips the presentation to its essentials. Morton performs the song alone at a piano in a dimly lit room. The camera holds his face. No cutaways, no choreography, no gospel choir. Just the song and the weight it carries. The visual arrived on May 29 alongside the single.
