American guitarist Carlos Santana does not play politics. He plays human. The seventy-eight-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, born in Autlán de Navarro, Mexico, and raised on mariachi violins before he switched to electric guitar, built a career on blending Latin jazz and psychedelic rock into a sound that transcended language. His band Santana’s 1969 Woodstock set turned him into a counterculture icon. The 1999 album Supernatural won nine Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. He has also never stopped watching the border. On May 28, 2026, Santana teams with Becky G, the Mexican-American singer from Inglewood, California, who taught herself guitar at thirteen, covered Kanye West’s “Otis” on YouTube, and turned that momentum into a career spanning music, acting, and activism. “Mi Gran Amor” is not a love song. It is a protest wrapped in a melody.

Barrera, the Mexican-American hitmaker who has written for Madonna, Shakira, and Peso Pluma, grew up listening to Santana’s records with his father. Playing with Santana at the Latin Grammys in late 2025 became one of the most special nights of his life. “Mi Gran Amor” is the third single from Santana’s upcoming album, following his collaborations with Grupo Frontera (“Me retiro”) and Carín León (“Velas”). The song’s lyrics trace the daily reality of Latino migrant workers in the United States. It opens with a scene at four in the morning. A woman leaves for work before sunrise. In her home country, she was a lawyer. Here, she scrubs floors. She is stopped on her way to a job and threatened with deportation. She leaves behind a family that depends on her.
