American guitarist Tom Morello has turned the amplifier into a political weapon for thirty years. A founding member of Rage Against the Machine and a driving force behind Audioslave, the Grammy winner is also an outspoken activist, now a week out from his “Power to the People” festival outside Washington, D.C. On May 29, he released “Adjourn It,” a new solo single from his upcoming album on Mom+Pop. The track features vocalist Serj Tankian, the Armenian-American frontman of System of a Down, and Roman Morello, the guitarist’s fifteen-year-old son. Roman wrote the main riff. Morello, whose riffs have soundtracked protests for decades, calls the song “a clarion call for justice in unjust times.” It is a rap-metal protest anthem with a chorus that opens with “Burn it, Turn it, Have them fucking learn it/Make them pay for their crimes, Adjourn it.”

The official visualizer, streaming on Morello’s YouTube channel, intercuts performance footage with clips from “Salt of the Earth,” a 1954 film about Mexican-American zinc miners fighting labor exploitation. The film, blacklisted by Hollywood, stars real miners and was produced by directors blacklisted for their political beliefs. Morello weaves those images into a modern call for immigration justice. The track was produced by Zakk Cervini, a Canadian hitmaker who has worked with Bring Me The Horizon, Yungblud, and Aerosmith. Cervini also mixed the track. Morello co-wrote the song with his son, Tankian, and Cervini. Morello’s cousin, a victim of police brutality, narrates a spoken-word section. The song arrived on the heels of Morello’s announcement of the Power to the People Festival, a non-partisan celebration of peace, justice, solidarity, music, and community action, set for October 3 in Columbia, Maryland. Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, and Killer Mike are among the performers. The festival will benefit immigrant advocacy groups. Stream “Adjourn It” on all major platforms.
