One of Afrobeats’ fast-rising talents YKB (real name Oluwo Yusuf Gbolaga) doesn’t just sing, he glides over the beat, the singer-songwriter is transforming the sound of Afropop, he keeps his sound fresh yet firmly grounded in his roots – crafting authentic Afrobeats with enough edge to redefine the local sound.
With his latest offering, the rising singer-songwriter from Lagos, Nigeria, serves up heart-pounding Afrobeats from the source. “Bo Card” is a sweet concoction of romanticism and authenticity. YKB layers honeyed vocals over the alluring Funwon- and Spax-production – pulling the listener in and hitting them where they can feel it.
Amid rolling drums and exaggerated promises to a lover, YKB crafts a story about finding a girl so irresistible, you’re willing to go broke just to have a chance with her. “‘Bo Card’ means spending money,” YKB explains. “I think a lot of people will recognise that feeling of trying to convince a lady that you’re compatible. Basically letting her know, if she gives me a chance she won’t regret it.”
On “Bo Card,” he once again demonstrates why he’s one of the most genuine and exciting talents in the ever-expanding Afropop scene. The sticky-sweet single also heralds his forthcoming EP, Yusful Music, dropping in March.
YKB’s dexterity and style are a signature at this point.. Ever since he caught our attention with his 2019 debut, YKB has carved a lane for himself with his vibrant artistic vision and refined execution.
“This is an introduction to a new chapter. I’m refining what I’ve always done and taking it even further.” – YKB
