World-trending Nigerian singer, Wizkid & Tems perform the “Essence” monster hit on The Tonight Show by Jimmy Fallon.
Wizkid and Tems runaway hit “Essence” continues to reach new platforms and audiences well after its initial release. Earlier this week, the Nigerian duo appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” where they were seen performing the infectious cut in the midst of an empty arena — despite the lack of a crowd, the live rendition still provided the same energy that those watching from home could enjoy all the same.
“Essence” is taken from Wizkid‘s fourth studio LP Made in Lagos, which was released just before Halloween last year and (in addition to Tems) saw contributions from Burna Boy, Skepta, Damian Marley, H.E.R., Ella Mai, and more, over 14 tracks. In addition to surpassing African streaming records, Made in Lagos ended up on charts around the world, including the Billboard 200 in the United States. Back in August, Wizkid kept his momentum going with a deluxe edition of the album, adding on four new songs — including a remix of “Essence” alongside Justin Bieber.
Produced by P2J and Legendury Beatz, “Essence” has continued on to become one of the biggest songs of the year overall, becoming the first Nigerian song to land on Billboard’s Global 200 and Hot 100 charts, the latter of which saw the saw peak at the ninth spot. Considered a blend of Afrobeats and R&B, the song sees Wizkid and Tems taking on the roles of two individuals in an apparent love affair:
“Say na me dey mess up your mind, and na me dey make you free up your mind, say your body talk to me nice, say na my love, you dey need for your life, yeah our love no be lie, see yeah we dey together yeah day and night, yeah, if I leave you go kpai, yeah, if you leave I go kpai, I’m strokin’ your body, baby, lovin’ your body, baby, as you’re whinin’ your body, baby…”
