Meghan Markle sues British Tabloid over leak of a Private Letter

When the Mail on Sunday published a letter written by Meghan Markle to her father, Thomas Markle, in February, it was an escalation in an already embittered relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and the British tabloids.

Though Meghan and the rest of the royal family avoided commenting at the time, now she and her husband, Prince Harry, are pushing back. In a statement released Tuesday, the couple revealed that she is filing a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, the tabloid’s parent company, over the publication of the letter.

The announcement comes near the end of a 10-day tour that brought Megan and Harry to various locations around southern Africa, but according to Harry, the legal action has been brewing for months. In the statement Harry mentioned the Mail’s conduct regarding the letter. “In addition to their unlawful publication of this private document, they purposely misled you by strategically omitting select paragraphs, specific sentences, and even singular words to mask the lies they had perpetuated for over a year,” he wrote.

He describes “continual misrepresentations” and a “ruthless campaign” against Meghan in particular “that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.“ The statement continues, “For these select media this is a game, and one that we have been unwilling to play from the start. I have been a silent witness to her private suffering for too long. To stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in.”
