The sign of a truly effective trap rapper is the quickness with which they can transport listeners into an alluring underworld of sex, drugs, and money. Ricky Hampton aka Finesse2tymes has that skill in droves. But you wouldn’t have necessarily known that a year ago, when the Memphis paragon was still locked up on a 2017 gun charge.
After serving time, he was released on the first day of July 2022. Three days later, 2tymes label dropped a compilation of his older singles, including the aspirational “Some Money,” as a reminder of the considerable potential that had him playing festivals pre-lockup. Hampton says that time behind bars motivated him to leave the “dumb shit” behind and refocus on rap.
That’s probably why a big smile tends to creep across his face during cyphers. This is a man manifesting his dreams, guided by urgency and a knockabout voice. The grin-worthy stuff also includes the fact that he has fans in Lil Baby, Moneybagg Yo, and Gucci Mane. The three southern rap titans jumped on ’90 Days,’ 2tymes strong 2022 album/mixtape that cemented him as one of trap’s most exciting voices of late.
This Ctrl performance of “Overdose” had it all: references to anime and Steak ’n’ Shake, double entendres, and plenty of swag. Indeed, Mr. Hampton is making up for lost time, and not holding anything back.
